By the time of the game, the Ishimura performed 34 successful planetcracks and is now in the process of beginning its 35th. Thanks to planetcracking, mankind was now thriving again and resources are plentiful. Even though there are subsequent Planetcrackers (a small fleet now existed), the Ishimura remained the iconic symbol of mankind's will to survive, even after all of these decades. The Ishimura's job was to mine other planets for their most rare and most valuable resources to take them back to Earth. The USG Ishimura was a ship designed for the new resource-gathering practice: planetcracking. At a time of near-desperation, the CEC engineered the ship that would eventually save all of humanity: the USG Ishimura. That is where the Concordance Extraction Corporation came in. The remaining humans realized that the only way to gain the resources to survive would be to search new planets for resources. Earth has gone through an extinction-level event, caused by rapacious and unsustainable use of resources. This means that, for the most part, the Church of Unitology is really a cult with some disturbing rituals and retainment tactics.Dead Space is set in 2508. While Markers are the iconography of Unitology, most don't actually get to see them since they're kept confidential by EarthGov and Unitology leaders. It's safe to say many have likely been recruited through aggressive methods and retained through shady means. In practice, though, the church performs dangerous rites and rituals at varying ranks which are often kept secret and meant to secure followers. There are advertisements throughout the station and a large Church on board, as well as one particular living area having dedicated Unitology statues. In Dead Space 2, players can see the reach of Unitology first hand throughout Titan Station. There are also recruitment centers, with some members targeted because of how gullible they are. According to in-game lore, Unitology recruits aggressively as most aren't shy about their beliefs, often handing out Unitology literature and preaching in the streets.
